Tom Will's fifth book, Rhymes, is as simple as the title suggests. Every poem in Rhymes rhymes, or is meant to. And that they all have the most in common. Although—as the cover warns us—SOME LIBERTIES HAVE BEEN TAKEN.
Rhymes is a collection in three sections: "A Half Century of Roundels" is as it sounds— fifty poems exploring the roundel form as it was devised by the latter-era Swinburne, with not only original explorations of the form, but also works by and for and before and after poets such as Dickey, Sitwell, Moore, O'Hara, and Corbière. "Triolets, Villanelles, Sonnets, Couplets, Etc.", is a section of more varied formal (lower case "f") ventures, where once again Tom Will proves he can walk down the street while making any form seem fashionable. Finally, "Some of the Chansons of Clément Marot" takes us back to the 16th century to the young poems of a somewhat overlooked and underrated poet: Clément Marot. A "Chanson" is simply a song.
Ninety-two poems in total round out the collection, on typical Will-ian subjects: women, the moon, cats, nature and the nation. For those who are familiar with Tom Will's work, Rhymes presents everything you know and love about his poetry. And for those who are unfamiliar, we strongly feel you will not be unsusceptible to this collection's charm as an introduction to him.
